Pilot program 2006/2007

Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2006-10-20 15:17.

During its pilot year the DLP will develop a series of tailor-made workshops for a variety of community partners. Building relationships with our local partners will foster a genuine understanding of the needs of the DLP's constituents, and help in the long-run to develop an attractive program that is practical for our community.

The workshops will be facilitated and taught by local media professionals. In addition to teaching, workshop leaders will act as mentors, describing their careers, their development paths, and giving advice to youth seeking to further their professional development in that domain. Each group participating in workshops will collaborate with their mentors to develop a curriculum and a content production goal that reflects their experiences and creative interests. Mentors will provide expertise in terms of media choice, production skills and creative feedback. The group leaders from each youth centre will participate in the project as creative collaborators and support workers, helping establish links and facilitate cooperative learning between youth and mentors.

A needs assessment is being conducted presently to ensure that the workshops being offered will resonate with local youth, as well as being accessible in terms of times and locations to the broad majority of the intended audience.

The pilot series should begin no later then February and run in the afternoons and evenings, ending in May 2007. It is estimated that there will be between 4-6 workshops of 9-18 hours each conducted in spring of 2007.

At the end of the pilot year in May of 2007, the Atwater Library and Computer Center will host a showcase of student work open to the participants, their families, friends and invited members of the general public. A showcase will provide youth with tangible support for their efforts in the form of audience appreciation and networking opportunities. In addition, the DLP will get feedback on the pilot years successes, learning what aspects of the project merit further development in 2008.
